About Us
It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish.

Overview and Our Mission

The Right to Live Campaign is dedicated to the defense of the right to life and dignity of life of every human being. It believes in the respect of the dignity of all human life from conception; through every stage of development to natural death and it uphold the right to the enjoyment of life free from any abuse for all human beings. The Campaign rejects euthanasia, abortion and whatever devalues or damages human life.

The Mater Homes vision seeks to offer pro-active support, to back the Catholic Church’s rejection of abortion by providing a feasible and viable alternative to those women, who through various circumstances, might seek to terminate the life of the child they carry.

We defend this belief in three ways:
  • We seek to inform and educate people about the sanctity of life and the evils of abortion
  • We speak out and protest through various legitimate channels
  • We are committed to giving real practical assistance to those in crisis

History of The Right to Live

The Right to Live Campaign is sanctioned by the South African Catholic Bishop’s Conference and was founded in 1996 by Father Massimo Biancalani who was appointed to his position by Cardinal Wilfred Napier OFM in the Archdiocese of Durban. Father Biancalani is the co-ordinator of the program. It has grown over the last 10 years and now operates 7 ‘Mater Homes’ in the KwaZulu/Natal, South Africa where it offers sanctuary and practical help to women who are faced with crisis or ‘unwanted’ pregnancy situations as well as abused women who have nowhere else to turn. It offers assistance to those suffering from Aids and to children who are infected or affected by Aids or who suffer from extreme poverty.

Mater Domini - The First Mater Home in Cape Town

With the blessing of the Archbishop of Cape Town, Archbishop Lawrence Patrick Henry, the Right to Live campaign launched its 1st Mater Home in Cape Town - the 8th Mater Home - called Mater Domini (Mother of The Lord). The need for such accommodation in the Western Cape has become increasingly apparent as the province currently has one of the highest abortion rates in the country - driven in part by the lack of other available options to women who find themselves in such a predicament.

Centrally located in Pinelands, Mater Domini is modelled on the other Mater Homes and is run with a specifically Catholic ethos - providing a loving, caring environment that respects the sanctity of life and freedom from abuse for all human beings. In conjunction with the Salesian Institute and various other organisations, we provide non-judgmental counseling; and medical and spiritual support to women and their babies. We also offer access to skills training programmes that help people develop their skills and we support them in seeking and securing employment.

The Campaign is run entirely on donations and it is only through the generousity of donors that we are able to run Mater Domini and offer support to those who are in need of help and those who are most vulnerable in our society. We trust that God will continue to sustain and bless our endeavours.

The Culture of Life

A truly just society affirms the moral equality of all human beings and provides the full protection of the law for all its members, regardless of gender, race, creed, age, size, wealth, or physical or mental attainments. It bestows a special protection on the weak and vulnerable and makes generous provisions for those in need and marginalised by society.

Without a doubt, the outstanding mark of today's world is violence. Violence between nations, violence between communities, violence against women, violence against children, and violence against the weak and the poor. The last decade has been the most violent decade in the world's history.

One of the greatest and worst violence today is one we hardly see because it is behind closed doors and largely kept out of the news. It is violence against the unborn human child. Abortion. The deliberate and direct premeditated killing of an innocent and defenseless human being. In the 20th century, the total number of deaths resulting from all the wars fought is only a fraction of the deaths by from abortion. Consider these figures: USA - 1.5 million abortions a year. India: 12 - 15 million abortions a year. Worldwide, an estimated 80-100 million abortions a year. And yet, in the so-called "civilized" world, abortion has become largely acceptable, and part of everyday life. As Pope John Paul II says, the world is embracing a culture of death.

The Right to Live Campaign is opposed to this violence and actively works to promote a culture of life protecting the sanctity and dignity of all human life.
