August 28, 2007, CAPE TOWN: Right To Live Campaign launches First Mater Home in Cape Town.
The Right to Live Campaign in it's current format, founded and co-ordinated by Fr Massimo Biancalani and sanctioned by Cardinal Wilfrid Napier of the Archdiocese of Durban, is launching its 8th Mater Home – and the 1st in Cape Town – to be known as Mater Domini (Mother of the Lord). For more than ten years, The Right to Live Campaign has provided practical assistance to women who are faced with a crisis pregnancy situation as well as abused women who have nowhere else to turn. The need for such accommodation in the Western Cape has become increasingly apparent as the province currently has one of the highest abortion rates in the country - driven in part because of the lack of other available options to women who find themselves in such a predicament. The Mater Homes vision seeks to offer pro-active support, to back the Church's rejection of abortion by providing a feasible and viable alternative for those women, who through various circumstances, might otherwise seek to terminate the life of the child they carry.
Centrally located, Mater Domini will be modelled on the other 7 Mater Homes, which operate in the Diocese of Durban, KZN, under the leadership of Fr Massimo Biancalani. A group of Cape Town Catholics have initiated this project, and will oversee the establishment and running of the home. Like the other ‘Mater’ homes, the house will have a specifically
Catholic ethos - respecting the dignity and right to life and freedom from abuse of all human beings, from conception. The Campaign rejects euthanasia, abortion and whatever devalues or damages human life.
We aim to provide counselling, medical and spiritual support to women and their babies and in conjunction with the Salesian Institute and various corporate will also provide skills training programmes and employment opportunities. This project has the blessing of the Archbishop of Cape Town, as well as the support of organizations such as the Knights of da Gama, the St Vincent de Paul Society the Catholic Women's League and local parishes. The Campaign is run entirely on donations and it is only because of the generosity of donors that we are able to open the doors of this new house, to those who most desperately need our help. We trust that God will continue to sustain and bless our endeavour.
The launch and an open day will be held at the house, 23 Morningside Road, Pinelands on Spring Day, 1st September 2007, from 12h00 to 15h00. The opening ceremony will begin at 12h00. All are most welcome to stop by and have a look around at our new home and meet the team.
